Rhododendron Needlers Quilt Guild will be holding their biennial Quilt Show, Traditions and Treasures, Saturday, March 19 (10-5), and Sunday, March 20 (10-4), at the Blue Hills Regional Technical High School in Canton, MA.
Featured at the show will be the, “Supper Quilt”, modeled after Leonardo DaVinci’s “The Last Supper”. The quilt was made by Dr. Donald Locke of Waxahachie, Texas, it has been viewed by thousands throughout the United States and has been on exhibit in several countries. It has only appeared in New England once and may not be back in this area. This quilt show offers a unique opportunity to view this incredible piece of art. Dr. Locke is now retired and travels with the quilt, he hopes to have it hosted in every state, to date it has been to 32 states.
The quilt took Dr. Locke over 2 ½ years to complete, over 1600 hours dedicated to the piece. It is impressive at 15 ft wide and 5.5 ft tall. It was constructed by sewing over 51,000 ½ inch squares made up of some 350 different hand dyed fabrics that were sewn together formulate the image. World renowned quilt artist Linda Taylor did the machine quilting for this work.
Long time Canton resident, Jane McClellan, is the Show Chairperson and an avid quilter. Each year the guild creates a quilt that is used as a fund raiser for the nonprofit organization. Jane managed the creation and fund raising process for this quilt. The quilt is made in the scraped pieced traditional and has been shown through out the local area and will be raffled off after the show to some lucky individual.
In addition to the individual works and “The Supper Quilt”, there will be a special small quilt exhibit loaned by the New England Quilt Museum, a tribute to New England, entitled “Lobstah to Green Monstah”.
