Boycott in Store for Radio Ads for Canton's Judge Rotenberg Center

New Yorker planning boycott; Judge Rotenberg Center not concerned.

Editor's Note: This is the first article in a three-part series. Be sure to read Canton Patch on Tuesday for the continuation, including reaction from parents and supporters.

A self-titled children’s rights advocate is rallying his troops to boycott Massachusetts and New York radio stations from airing advertisements for the Judge Rotenberg Center in Canton.

George Deabold, who refers to himself as a national children’s rights and educational advocate, and is the founder of School Watch, has rallied other advocates and politicians, including Senator Brian A. Joyce (D-Milton) to boycott.

Joyce, who represents Avon, Braintree, Canton, East Bridgewater, Easton, Milton, Randolph, Sharon, Stoughton, and West Bridgewater, supporteed an ammendment banning aversives (electrical shock treatments) that was passed by the state senate in May.

Deabold started the initiative last week and hopes to stop radio stations from running ads for the Canton-based facility. Since the indictment of Rotenberg Founder Matthew Israel in May, Deabold has been working on ideas for advocacy. This included the radio station boycott and ultimately shutting the center down, he said.

“[The Judge Rotenberg Center] should not be able to generate any more money because of these atrocities to children,” Deabold told Canton Patch.

The advocate, who is based out of Long Island, New York, is using an email campaign to spread the word and reach out to executives at Clear Channel Communications, CBS radio and other radio stations in Massachusetts and New York.

He is set to unveil an online petition on www.care2.com to gain signatures to present to the radio stations today, protesting their support of the JRC. The online site has 16,173,699 members, according to the website.

“My goal is over a half a million listeners to start an online petition,” Deabold said.  “Then we will promote with handouts to drive the people to the petition then we’ll send the signatures to the corporations.”

Other advocates are sending letters and emails to stations to ask them to not advertise for the JRC, according to Deabold.

“It’s a public action against a public company,” he said. The stations need “to be held accountable for poor taste, a lack of judgment.”

However, the legal counsel for the JRC told Canton Patch that the center is not worried about any impact a boycott will have.

The boycott by “an uniformed, unauthorized… person would not have any effect whatsoever,” said Michael Flammia, the attorney for the Judge Rotenberg Center.

Flammia said Deabold has no legal, educational or medical qualifications. “It is important to note that has no qualifications of any kind… no affiliations of any kind. He is just a person that has an opinion. He has never been to the JRC, as far as I know.”

“Mr. Deabold has made it clear that he has some uninformed or misinformed opinion about JRC, which is clearly wrong,” Flammia said.  “He has the right to boycott any radio station that he wants.”

In addition, JRC students and parents “have the right to support the school and seek effective treatment and education for their kids,” he stated.

Be sure to log onto Canton Patch tomorrow to read the second article and hear the perspective of parents and supporters of the JRC.

Michael Flammia,
I have a question for you. Why the plea deal ? I can only think of two reasons why Dr. Matthew Israel would cut such a deal. # 1. He is as as guilty as sin. or # 2. He has a loser for a lawyer. I my opinion he is guilty as sin and you are a loser. To think you probably feed your kids with the money you make defending People like Israel. How much sleep do you get at night ? I mean, talk about selling your soul.
I think this guy Deabolds going to take the center down.
“Everybody pulls for David, nobody roots for Goliath.” I took the time to call one of stations that used to run ads for the center. They said the talked to Deabold and wont run any more ads for The Judge Rotenberg Center.

The boycott by “an uniformed, unauthorized… person would not have any effect whatsoever,” said Michael Flammia, the attorney for the Judge Rotenberg Center.(from the story above.)
Thats right Flammia , But this boycott is being started by a well informed and highly respected advocate Mr. George Deabold.

Flammia, you say the boycott will not have any effect .We will see about that ! !
I am a member of COPPA and I dont like you, Matthew Israel or "JRC"
I am going to send letters and emails to stations and ask them to not advertise for the JRC.

Michael Flammia, you want to talk about my lack of affilation?Your client Matthew Israel had to step down as part of his plea deal.Matthew Israel can no longer be affiliated with the school he founded ,so who is it that has no affilation Michael ? I Must also point out that Israel has a long probation period ahead of him.I am the founder and chairman of SchoolWatch an org. that fights for the rights of children with special needs.Like most Americans, we 're against torturing children.Mr. Flammia you're pro skin shock, do you shock your own children ?
According to the story in Mother Jones....
By agreeing to leave the school, Israel was able to avoid incarceration . The Massachusetts attorney general Martha Coakley indicted Israel on charges that he ordered staff to destroy video footage of the incident. Dr. Israel then attempted to destroy evidence of the events and mislead investigators, and that conduct led to his indictment.

Uninformed or misinformed Mr.Flammia ?

REPORT ON JRC as per
THE STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT REPORT June 10,2011
SUBJECT: The Judge Rotenberg Center
Recent Events
May 23, 2011 : Complaint Investigation Findings Issued by the Department

On March 24, 2011 a state complaint against JRC was received by the Department alleging that a student who was not authorized to receive aversive interventions was placed in a movement limatation device (restraint chair with leg and arm cuffs ). Upon investigation the Department found the following:
JRC used corporal punishment and aversive interventions with a student during the school day when it placed the student in a physical restraint when there was no situation in which immedediate intervention involving the use of resonable physical force was warranted and when the student was placed in leg and waist restraints and in a 4-point mechanical restraint chair in violation of sections 19.5 (a) and (b),200.7 (b)(8)(i) and 200.22(d) of the NYS Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.

Attorney Flammia,
You're doing a great job. Keep it up. JRC needs to remain open for those people who severely hurt themselves and others, and who don't respond to Positive Only Programming.

JRC has saved so many lives. Thank you for fighting to save lives.

Mr. Flammia cant save the school. Mr. Flammia could not save Dr. Israel. Matthew Israel the king of pain was cast out of his kingdom. The King of pain jumped ship to save his own butt.Christine the Center needs to be closed and the abuse has to be put to an end.Christine did you read the complaint that NYSED received on March 24,2011 ? Christine you cant have children being abused like that.
PS. FYI - The Radio Station boycott is taking hold and some stations will not be running JRC ads.

Mr. Deabold,
I am just curious about you and what you are fighting for. Do you have a child who has severe challenging behaviors that does self abuse and severely hurt other people? Do you have a child whose application was rejected by all schools in NY? Do you have a child who was moved from JRC , placed in a NY school again and then was hospitalized because of the severity of his self-injurious behaviors and was put in a 4 point strap in a hospital in NY? Do you have a child who was put in a psychiatric ward for the second time and was chemically restrained and suffered seizure because of being over medicated of psychotropic medications and then mechanically restrained in bed for 2 weeks. Do you have a child whom the hospital doesn't even want to admit? Luckily this child was accepted back at JRC when no other placement could take him for emergency placement. It just so happen that this child is my son, he is alive and was back to where he left off. He was happy to be back to the caring staff and back to his routine. Oh, incidentally, my son is on the positive reinforcement only and not on the GED program yet he improved a lot. I am a mother and I know what is best for my son. Did you hear about the abuse and death of a boy with autism at OD Heck Center in NY, published in NY Times this June? And what do you proposed to do with the students of JRC if you wanted the school closed down?

Eudessa,
if your son is on the positive reinforcement only and not on the GED program yet, and he has improved a lot, then why does he have to be at rotenberg ?
why would he need to be shocked ?
I have a problem with you saying that your son is not on the GED program yet.
The problem could be a combination of your low expectations and the New York city school systems failure.

Eudessa ,
New York City schools suck, the New York state population at Rotenberg this year is about 110 students. Aprox. 90 % of the students are from New York City. New York city uses The Rotenberg Center as a dumping ground for children that they don't want to deal with or can't deal with.
You need help ?
Send me an email advocate411@optonline.net - I will advocate for your child for free ! !

He had to be at JRC because no NY residential school accepted him. I think I was misunderstood. When I said "not on the GED program yet he improved a lot", I meant that he is not on the GED, yet (but) he improved a lot. He can never be on GED because NY does not allow it anymore on incoming students to JRC. My son is just being redirectedthe whole day and no restraints at all. When a NY school finally accepted him (maybe thinking they can manage his problem behaviors), he was moved there from JRC. This NY res. school medicated him with Lithium. He badly injured himself, etc. JRC eliminated all his meds upon admission the 1st time. To continue, this NY school even resorted to calling JRC and asking how they dealt with those behaviors. Mind you, in this NY school, my son "ate" physical restraints for breakfasts and was restrained everyday, several times each day from morning till midnight. Even with his badly injured face, they restrained him for yelling and attempted pinch. My son probably felt safer at JRC and that he knew he is well taken cared of because the staff understands him better. He is non-verbal, mentally and behaviorally challenged. BY the way, thanks for your concern. It is appreciated. Now he is back at JRC and is doing well and I know he is happy.

Mr. Deabold,

In your response to Eudessa I., you reveal you ignorance of JRC's treatment, and of the choices parents need to make. You ask;" if your son is on the positive reinforcement only and not on the GED program yet, and he has improved a lot, then why does he have to be at rotenberg ? why would he need to be shocked ?" If you knew what you were talking about, you would realize that the GED is the name for the device used in the skin shock procedure. What Eudessa I. was communicating is that her son, despite behaviors so severe that no NY school would accept him, has progressed without the need for aversive treatment (the GED). After improving, a NY school accepted him, and he lasted only a few months before severely mutilating his face, being hospitalized, chemicall and mechanically restrained, and could not be served by this, or (again) any other NY program. In your asking asking why he needs to be at JRC, and why would he need to be shocked, a) he needs to be at JRC because no other NY school was/is willing to accept him, and b) he does not need to be shocked, and has never been shocked in his time at JRC. Of course, these truths, as told by many parents of JRC students, do not serve your goal of eliminating this option for hundreds of current and future students and parents. Like many idealogues, you do not let the facts get in the way of a self-serving political agenda.

I hope all those commenting here realize that there is no "need" for anyone to be at the Judge Rotenberg Center or any such place. I am not sure what people mean when they say " no one else will take" their children. I hope to see parents become informed and empowered so no one will ever again believe that the systematic abuse and what some officials consider actual torture, is ever ok for anyone, and most certainly never based on a group of people due to their differences in ability.
The students being subjected to the most abuse, per research are overwhelmingly autistic and overwhelmingly minorities, and people with no family or desperate families longing for a cure, or treatments to make their loved ones appear more "normal". Abusing someone into submission and fear is not the same as an actual treatment or solution to their manifestations of disabilities. With all I have learned about various practices at places like JRC, it is absolutely abuse at the very least.

Ms. Malabey, I agree that "concern for basic human rights is not a "political agenda". Concern for human rights looks at individuals, and attempts to make decisions based upon what is best for that individual, under the circumstances, rather than what is in lockstep with some ideology (ie. a political agenda). However, what about an individual who is exhibiting severe, potentially life threatening aggressive or self-injurious behaviors, and no program will accept this individual? Does denial of the only program willing to accept and treat this individual demonstrate a concern for the individual's human rights, or does it demonstrate conformity with a political agenda? You state: "I am not sure what people mean when they say " no one else will take" their children." What this means is that some parents spend months, even years, attempting to find a placement for their difficult to treat child, and all programs applied to reject the child. When you advocate in favor of attempts to block admittance to the only program willing to take these parent's children, how can you cite a concern for human rights? What about the rights of that child and his/her family, and their right to attempt to receive treatment which is their only option, and which they feel may be the only potentially effective treatment left to try?

Mr. Michel Banks,
Do you get your pay check from JRC ? Have you ever worked for JRC ? Are you a parent of A child at JRC ? You talk about the GED and if you know so much about the GED, Have you ever felt the skin shock ? Have you ever felt the pain and discomfort level of the GED -1 and GED- 4 ?

I don't think you should be talking about the use of the GED until you feel it for yourself.

I know some parents and reporters have had a sample skin shock. What I found out was that all of the people did not know what the "Adjustable Device " was set on
.That being said, I asked to feel the GED devices skin shock and I was told no.

Matthew Israel is now branded a common criminal. Matthew Israel is now an old man claoked in disgrace. The Judge Rotenberg Center should be torn down. The children that were abused should be sent to a place that wont harm them again. Mr. Deabold has come to this site and posted information that shows the abuse is still going on. I get sick to my stomach when I think about all the cover ups. On August 26, 2007 two students were mercilessly shocked and then Matthew Isral tried to cover his tracks, He failed and was pushed out of the center that he started. Israel knows what he has done and the humiliation coupled with the loss of power he now bears is long overdue.

We need to be vigilant in making sure the children in this center and anywhere else cannot be tortured. Recent events like the one Mr. Deabold posted about are proof enough for me that this place should not be caring for Americas disabled children. The event that took place on March 24, 2011 should be the final nail in the Centers coffin.

I support the Boycott , Behavioral Research Lessons are Torture .
Children at the Judge Rotenberg Center are often shackled, restrained and secluded for months at a time, the report says. Social isolation, and food deprivation as forms of punishment are common. Mock and threatened stabbings -- to forcibly elicit unacceptable behaviors resulting in electric shock punishments (Labeled as Behavioral Research Lessons or BRLs, by the center) were reported to MDRI as well as state regulatory bodies.

Skinner VS. Israel (I like that , good screen name ! )
This is some more info on BRI and JRC. (It dates back to 1986)
There is a hierarchy of aversives at BRI. For simply mumbling at the wrong time, a student may receive a token monetary fine or get misted with water from a bottle. It's at this point that BRI starts to get in trouble with its critics. In addition to the white noise treatment, instructors apply what they call the automatic vapor spray, during which the student is forced to sit in a small booth. Shackled in soft plastic cuffs, he wears a helmet that blasts him with white noise and sprays his face with a cold water vapor. Often an ammonia pellet is shoved beneath his nostrils just before the 15-minute process begins in earnest.

For these and other ingenious approaches, Israel was savaged by the Boston Phoenix, a weekly newspaper that referred to him as "Doctor Hurt." He has run into some flak from his colleagues as well. Robert Bowles, president of the National Society for Children and Adults with Autism, thinks Israel means well but finds his methods deplorable. He believes that BRI is not bringing autistic children to health but merely controlling them through fear.

Need I say more ?

Please do not support MDA until they change their attitude towards people with disabilities. If MDA wants to partner with Clear Channel ,So be it . Let the chips or change fall into the hands of another charity. A Charity that doesn’t partner with media corps that run ads for children’s torture centers. Write MDA a letter explaining why you no longer donate to them and what steps they can take to regain your support. Ask your employer to support a different charity.

The use of aversive therapy is a very controversial issue that is polarizing parents and professionals. There is extensive research that shows that the of use of aversives as a behavior management approach to effectively reduce or eliminate maladaptive behaviors is clear. The rotenberg center would have to admit that they can only get temporary positive results. The proof is that the children dont leave the center for years if ever. The Rotenberg center itself is the failed experiment of Dr. Matthew Isreal.

Thankfully and unfortunately most local station managers have never herd of the Judge Rotenberg Center. That being said, most were shocked to hear what has gone on at The Judge Rotenberg Center. I did send some station managers information on the Center and asked that they honor the boycott. Please be advised, The Rotenberg Center has run adds in the past. I only know of one Radio Station that is still running or presently running Advertisements’ for the Judge Rotenberg Center. That Radio is 97.1 / Hot 97 New York . I received a phone call today from one of our station monitors who reported that Hot 97 ran an advertisement for The Rotenberg Center between 2 and 3 pm on 8/15/2011. When the boycott was started it was thought that a National Boycott might have been needed but after hundreds of phone calls and emails we have come to realize that a more local approach to The Judge Rotenberg Center Advertisements’ should be used. I will be calling Hot 97 today and they will be dealt with.

Not a problem, lets get JRC closed !! That place is bad news and that station should short out. Hot 97 sucks for running ads for that place. Emmis is run by clowns
