Canton Getting Ready for the Fourth of July

Fireworks, activities to be held for the July 4 celebration this year.

The town is getting ready for summer.

The Canton Recreation Department is prepping for Canton's Fourth of July celebration. At last week's Board of Selectmen meeting, Recreation Director Jeff Kaylor and Recreation Commission Member Larry Bogue presented an update to the board on the plans.

The annual Fourth of July Celebration will kick off with a five-mile road race, Kaylor said. This will be the 38th year for the race, he said. Past races have attracted about 150 runners.

The festivities will continue on July 4, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the Galvin Middle School. The fireworks will go off at 9:00 p.m. and last about 30 minutes.

The celebration will include tons of activities for kids, including concession stands, games, hay rides, face painting, a bounce house and an obstacle course.

"Hopefully, it's a great day for everyone," Bogue said. Although there will be no carnival this year, the one-day event will have plenty for the youngsters to do, he said.

The Recreation Department is still seeking donations to make the festivities happen. Those interested in contributing to the Fourth of July celebration can mail a check to the Recreation Department's office.
