Canton Police and Fire Departments Are Celebrating for a Cause

The Canton Police and Fire Gala is being held next weekend.

Swapping their uniforms for formal wear, Canton's first responders are hosting the Canton Fire and Police Gala on May 14. The officers and firefighters are raising money for the Canton Area Helpline and remembering those who lost their lives on 9/11.

The community event is a "way to honor our fellow police officers and firefighters who were killed in the line of duty on September 11, 2001," Canton Police Lt. Helena Findlen said. "This is the tenth anniversary of their sacrifice and we felt there was no greater way to remember them than to give back to the community we serve in a different way than is typical of each agency."

Findlen said the gala will also assist Canton residents in need. All proceeds from the gala will be donated to the Canton Helpline.

"The Canton Area Helpline offers services to neighbors in our community who are having difficulty–primarily economic," Findlen said. "Their mission is two-fold."

The Canton Helpline works with the Canton Food Pantry and helps keep the pantry funded, stocked and open, according to Findlen. "And, they help residents who are financially strained pay utility bills and medical bills," she noted. "They provide additional services, primarily to our mature residents, such as arranging rides to doctor appointments. They are great partners to the police and fire (departments) and a wonderful resource to our citizens."

The Canton Fire and Police departments joined together to plan the fundraiser. In addition to raising money for a worthy cause, and marking the tenth anniversary of 9/11, the gala will let the newer departments' members get to know other members on the force and in the town.

"From there, it grew and became this social event to begin the summer season," the police lieutenant said. " We are really excited and hope to see many of our residents and business owners come join us for this special occasion."

The Gala is being held on Saturday, May 14 at the Blue Hills Country Club. Cocktails start at 6:00 p.m. and dinner starts at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $50 and can be purchased at both the Canton Police Department and Canton Fire Department.
