Massachusetts state health officials recently recently approved regulations that would prevent bake sales from being held during school and in the 30 minutes before and after school to discourage unhealthy eating habits.
Gov. Deval Patrick has backed down on the regulations after criticism from parents and organizations that say putting restrictions on bake sales would negatively impact fundraising efforts for the schools and nonprofit groups, according to USA Today.
Legislation passed in 2010 will still require schools serve healthy snack options in the cafeterias and limit sugary foods.
Do you think Gov. Deval Patrick should enforce the bake sale ban to help encourage Massachusetts youth to have healthier eating habits, or should the bake sales still be allowed for fundraising purposes? Let us know what you think by sharing your opinion in the comments section.

I understand the need to improve school nutrition but seriously banning bake sales ! These bake sales are used to fund things that schools can't do on their own. Most of what's bought isn't by other students but by adults. In West Roxbury since schools often serve as polling locations you'll find a bake sale taking place.

I don't think the Governor should enforce the bake sale ban, bake sales at our local schools serve well to provide funding that is not otherwise available. I do however feel strongly that the Governor should consider a ban on allowing schools to serve as polling places. Polling in public schools is too disruptive, and potentially unsafe.

How ridiculous. A lot of stuff at bake sales is relatively healthy. The problem is NOT the items sold at bake sales - it's the eating habits of people in general. The same mode of thinking is that if there are illegal drugs available, everyone will want to take them. Just not true and stupid thinking. Teach children good eating habits and have family meals. Don't let the state outlaw bake sales. Honestly, get a grip!!

You can thank your Governor for sneaking this in with out any of us hearing about it! Remember, he is a good friend of Obamas & probably got a kick back for it. I for one am sick of being told What my kids can eat & do NOT want my kids lunches inspected by the schools & Bake sales help the community gather & share & earn money for whatever the project may be.

Personally I'm tired of government interfering in my raising of my children. If I don't want my children to eat these foods I won't give them money for them. Everything in moderation is what we should be teaching kids not banning foods. The more something is taboo the more they want it

I think the decision ought to be left up to the organization and the parents, not the government. And before the idea of banning bake sales, how about overhauling the school lunch program if they want to get involved. Processed foods and additives are just as bad! Did you know, though, that 1/2 of all medicare/medicaid (your tax dollars...in the billions) are used to treat people with illnesses due to being overweight and obese? I think a class in nutrition should be implemented and required at all grade levels.

And the Democrats wonder why people become Republicans... There are far too many special interest groups with lots of money and the threat lof opposition running around Beacon Hill. The really important part of this article is this quote "Legislation passed in 2010 will still require schools serve healthy snack options in the cafeterias and limit sugary foods." Are they afraid the tubby little kids, who do not get enough gym classes in the first place, are going to pig out at the "annual" bake sale? We won two world wars without government meddling and haven't one yet since the pols decided that they are smrater than you and I.

WOW - that's going a little too far. I don't "wonder why people become Repubs", I FEAR that they do. This has nothing to do with that. The Repubs have done enough in the last two years to make any sane person who is a Repub become anything BUT. The War on Women is one case in point - talk about taking away options and rights - fighting against Planned Parenthood???? Taking money from women's health care to allow the students of the country to keep their 3% student loans - - (and thus forcing Obama to veto it) yet voting for tax breaks for the 1% and cheering on the idea of MORE WAR - funded by WHO/WHAT?? ?!? GIVE ME A BREAK!! Get real.

At what point will voters wake up and realize..."Hey, wait a minute...is the government now telling me what I can and cannot eat?" People, think about how ridiculous this is! It is a BAKE SALE! We are not plopping bunt cakes and cannolis on little Jimmy's cafeteria tray every day! A bake sale has one purpose...to raise funds...not to fatten childeren. Just think, if we used all of the special interest funds and some of the salary monies these political idiots wasted on these regulations, we wouldn't need to have a bake sale!
I cannot wait to VOTE!

The same government that declares pizza a vegetable wants to ban cookies? If these people were acting in our best interests, they'd lower their own salaries, forego their benefits and give the savings to the school systems so that they wouldn't need bake sales.

More of the Food Police & our freedoms trying to be taken away! This has been a tradition for YEARS & Government has no business telling us how or when we can cook or bake GOOD food & sell it to benefit kids projects! It's up to the parents to control what their kids eat...not the Gov.

There are a lot more freedoms being taken away than anything to do with food - just count that states that are trying to ban (or already have banned) contraceptives and Planned Parenthood's much-needed women's health care - nothing to do with abortion, by the way - all because of the GOP and the hate of Obama. Sad.

The Killer Cupcake, sorry I don't see it. Not when it becomes an invasive, unnecessary government policy. It's a rather ironic stance against fat and bloat, given the government itself is built for size and not for speed.

The good thing is that the governor listened to the concerns of the "people" and reversed his decision. Very few politicians are willing to admit they made a mistake. I applaud him for that.
