Tell Us: Are You in Favor of Father-Daughter Dances?
Children will no longer be able to dance with their parents in Cranston, RI schools. What do you think about the move?
Parents of children who attend Cranston, RI public schools were notified recently of a ban on father-daughter and mother-son activities as school lawyers concluded the traditions violate state gender discrimination laws, Cranston Patch reports.
"The action was triggered by a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union, said school superintendent Judith Lundsten. The letter was written on behalf of a mother who said her daughter was unable to go to the father-daughter dance," the article said.
While title IX allows for father-daughter and mother-son activities, state law is more restrictive. Now, the Cranston school committee is asking state lawmakers to change Rhode Island law to mirror federal law, making the now banned dances legal again.

So wrong! I cherished the dances I had with my father. I was a princess in a princes arms. My father has been gone 11 years and I still hold those special moments precious. No matter the age, a father is a father and you are somehow Daddy's little girl!

I think they should be allowed. Anything that promotes family is good. Getting the parents to be invovled is good. If the kids doesnt have a Dad or Mom, then a uncle, aunt, friend of the family, another role model should be able to step in. I understand not wanting kids to feel left out, How about just a parent and child dance... If it needs to be more politically correct. Taking it away in full is sad.

When I first learned of this ban, I imagined a collective sigh of relief coming from all the men I have known. Of course, they willingly did what they had to do to please the little (and big) women in their life. But they would be perfectly content to just let it go.

Although, I do understand both sides ..how about "someone special " there are lots of parents deployed who might not be able to be there. There are now children with two moms or two dad's, single parents ..make it so everyone is special from all walks of life and welcome all!!

I think it is ridiculous! I did not have an opportunity to have the great fortune to grow up with a Father! He died when I was 1 of Leukemia! My Mom had a great brother, my Uncle Richie, who took me to many Father-Daughter dances. Those were some of my favorite and fondest memories!
