Trinity Church Carnival Ride Malfunctions in Canton Sunday Night

The ride malfunctioned with a child on the ride.

Canton firefighters rescued a stranded carnival ride passenger who was stuck atop a malfunctioning ride at the Trinity Church Carnival Sunday evening.

"A ride did malfunction causing a young lady to be assisted by CFD off the ride," Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody said tonight. "She was transported to an area hospital as a precaution."

The "Roll a Plane" ride was shut down after the evening incident and a sign on the ride notified carnival-goers that the ride was closed.

Doody said the "state inspector has been notified and will be responding tomorrow (Monday) to determine the cause of the problem."

Witness Falasha Harrison of Hyde Park attended the carnival for the first time with her family. She snapped photos of the event as firefighters arrived on scene and used their ladder to assist the youngster off the ride.

Harrison said the ride was stuck for about an hour and it looked like three children were stuck atop the ride.

My father was a District Fire Chief in the City of Fall River when I was a kid. He never ever allowed us to ride on traveling carnival rides, saying that they were not safe enough because they were always being taken apart, transported, and re-assembled. Instead we would go to the traditional amusement park a few times each summer. In those days we had Lincoln Park in North Dartmouth MA, and Rocky Point on the Narragansett Bay side of Warwick, RI. Both were an easy drive from Fall River for a day trip. They both had picnic grounds and a huge ballroom and indoor stage for shows. In addition, Rocky Point served it's famous Shore Dinner. The carnivals are tempting but I always tried to stay away from them with my own kids, remembering my father's words.
Now those places are gone, but a trip to Disney is a great vacation with kids. And then there is always 6 Flags if you feel the need.
