Weigh In: Postal Service Could Reduce Delivery

In the face of a possible bankruptcy, the U.S. Postal service has proposed slowing down delivery service.

By next spring, operations and services at your local post office might look very different: First-class mail delivery could slow down and next-day delivery service could be eliminated entirely in 2012.

U.S. Postal Service officials proposed the changes on Monday, as part of a $3 billion reduction in services. Up to half of its 487 mail processing centers around the country would also be closed under the plan.

The cuts could affect a variety of other businesses and services, including check payments, Netflix’s DVDs-by-mail program and newspaper delivery. The changes could also have implications for mail-order prescription drug services.
