About this column:

Our Senior Year columnist has moved on to college and writes about her adventures as a college freshman.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." This is a saying I've grown up with my whole life, but I'd beg to differ. Can words never hurt a person? If your bones break, the bones will heal. But the thing that needs the most healing is the emotional trauma and damage that is caused when those sticks and stones are thrown. The hurtful words that people say to one another are enough to do more damage than any broken bone would ever do. Some people may not ever recover from the damage that hurtful words can do. In light of the recent episode of "Glee" and the premiere of…
I am two weeks into my second semester of my freshman year in college and I feel like I am growing up! I have already mentioned how independent I have become since moving into college. Now, it is starting to really sink in. College life is so much of a change from high school. I am taking a micro-economics course this semester and it has really helped me to expand my knowledge. Although it is not my favorite class, and it is very difficult, I find it to be very informative. I consider myself to be a very privileged person. I am lucky enough to have parents who support me and help to pay for …
Winter break is my first long break since I started college. Moving back home for a month has been awesome! I love that I do not have to wear flip flops in the shower and that I have my own room. However, there are a lot of things I miss about good ole Colby-Sawyer. First off, I miss my friends. It is so much fun to be able to open my dorm room door to see a bunch of smiling people in the hall or in the next room. Colby-Sawyer is definitely my second home. Just like Canton, everyone at school is very friendly. While being home, I've learned that a lot about me has changed. I am a lot more …
I am officially all stressed out! Final papers (two ten-pagers are required,) exams and projects are all due within these next two weeks. That are all that is left of this semester! It is weird to think that I have almost completed a full semester, as a freshmen in college. Where does the time go? There is so much left for me to do in this semester that I feel as if winter break will simply never come. It is also very ironic that I am all stressed out, considering one of my liberal education courses is named, “All Stressed Out”. The course was created to help freshman develop time and …
When I walk around my small college campus, I look around and I see some familiar faces. I know some these people through my classes, clubs, or through other friends. However, some of these people I know through Facebook! It is weird to think about how online social sites, such as Facebook, have changed our way of communication. At times, I feel like face-to-face communication can be awkward, because I am so used to using technology to communicate. I found that I would see someone around campus who I am Facebook friends and I would not say “hi.” But later that night, if he/she uploaded a …
It is only the third week of school and I am already learning some valuable lessons. For starters, do not take your parents for granted. Although they may get on your nerves or tell you what to do too much, they do love you and when you are away from them you WILL miss them. Moving to college is a whole new lifestyle. There are no parents around, you will not have you big, comfortable bed, you do not have a car, and you rarely have alone time. Time management is crucial at college. At college, you have your group of friends around you all the time and because of this, there is constantly …
This was quite a stressful week at college. I did not even have a lot of homework, and I did not even have an exam. So why was I stressed? Well, I had a phone emergency! It was horrible. My generation is so dependent on cell phones and I did not realize that until this week. My phone is my everything. All of my plans are written down in my calender, my emails go to my phone and Facebook is right there for me. Of course I also have all my contacts in my phone and without it, it literally makes it impossible to make plans to meet up with my friends. My alarm clock is also on my Blackberry, …
I feel like I have already been at Colby-Sawyer College for a month!  I can not believe it has only been two weeks that I moved into school.  One of the great benefits about going to a small school is that you feel so comfortable so fast. When I first started off touring schools, I could clearly notice a difference between a big school and a small school. I toured UMASS Amherst and the feel of the campus was completely different from Colby-Sawyer. That is not to say it was bad or anything, the school was just not for me. Everyone at Colby-Sawyer knows each other and everyone always smiles and…
So, here I am. Writing to you from two and a half hours away from Canton! It is weird to think that at this time last year, I was starting off my last year of high school, and now, I'm starting off my freshman year in college. I do not know where the time went. If you are reading this and you are still in high school, take my advice: Enjoy it while you can. High school was great and even though I kept saying, “I cannot wait to get out of high school," it was still an awesome time. However, I do have to say, college is AMAZING! I am loving every second of it so far. I have only been here a …
Now that almost all of my fellow Canton High classmates have gone off to school, I guess it is my turn too. I would like to be this tough guy and say I am not nervous and that I will not miss home, but let's face the facts...there are a TON of things I am going to miss and a lot of reasons to be nervous. First off, I am not only going to a whole new town, but I am also going to a new state. I have lived in Canton, Massachusetts, my whole life and now I am starting a new adventure. It is a strange thought that I will wake up without my family right there. I will miss the familiar smell of my …
Preseason for fall sports has begun at Canton High School. It is a little bit of an eerie feeling for me this year. I will be going to help out at volleyball tryouts, instead of having the nervous butterflies in my stomach while I work hard and hope to make the team. The start of preseason for sports usually starts the countdown for most students for the start of the new school year. I have said this before, but it is important to note that being involved in high school is one of the best things you can do! When I was a freshman, I picked up the sport of volleyball and I fell in love with it…
