Prof. Matthews returns to the ICC for the third installment of his popular historical lecture series.

In December of 1921, the first treaty ever between Ireland and England was signed by the delegation lead Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith.  The treaty did not grant Ireland  republic status nor the inclusion of the 6 counties. Instead, it granted only limited dominion status and an oath of allegiance to the Crown.  The acceptance of the Treaty created an irreconcilable split in the IRA.  Men such deValera, Lynch, and Barry vehemently opposed the Treaty, while others lead by Michael Collins viewed the Treaty as the "freedom to achieve freedom". Civil war became inevitable  This is the story of one of the saddest periods in Irish history.
