Survey Says One-Third of Americans Believe Their Smile Can Lead to Love, Social and Professional Success Local Orthodontists Who Have Improved 20,000 Smiles Agree
BOSTON, MASS. (Issued Winter 2014) -- The verdict is in. Your smile is often the first thing people notice when meeting someone new. And most people agree that a great smile can lead to pluses in social circles, with potential love interests, and in professional settings.

More than one-third of American adults are unhappy with their smile, according to a survey commissioned by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) of which Dr. Robert Chavez and Dr. Andrew Chase of ARCH Orthodontics are long-time members. “A nicer smile helps in all relationships,” says Dr. Chavez who this year marks his 40th year in practice. “We have a solution for every Orthodontic problem.” He estimates that ARCH has helped to improve the smiles of 20,000 people, from age 4 to 84.
Seeing the results of this survey, especially around Valentine’s Day, inspires some people to consider finally taking care of teeth straightening, crowding, spacing or ‘bite’ issues that have made them uncomfortable or self-conscious for a long time, according to Dr. Chavez. Improved alignment can also help improve oral hygiene and prevent gum disease.

Among other findings of the national survey:
77% of women think crooked teeth are worse than a receding hairline in a potential love interest.
48% of Americans ages 18-24 have untagged a picture of themselves on Facebook because they didn’t like their smile.
Of Americans who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth, 36% believe they would have a better social life if they had better teeth.
22% of those who are unhappy with their smile think that better teeth would lead to a better love life.
On a professional level, 78% perceive adults with crooked teeth to be unsuccessful. 14% of those unhappy with their teeth felt that they might be missing out on a better job.
“Treatment today is unobtrusive, almost invisible,” says Dr. Chase. “Professional Orthodontics has come a long way with innovative options and materials such as clear aligners, lingual braces and ceramic braces,” adds Dr. Chase, who joined his father’s practice in 1998. “Healthy teeth can be moved at any age.” The survey shows that two-thirds of Americans think they are never too old for treatment.
Among well-known personalities who have worn clear and/or invisible braces are Justin Bieber (age 19) and Miley Cyrus (age 21), and those who waited a bit longer -- Tom Cruise (age 51) and Faith Hill (age 46). ARCH is the Official Orthodontist of Miss Massachusetts.
