Meg Delaporta of Canton, a senior at Blue Hills Regional, Scores Her 1,000th Point in Girls' Basketball

By Judy Bass

Margarita (Meg) Delaporta, a senior at Blue Hills Regional Technical School and an outstanding member of the school’s girls’ basketball team, scored her 1,000th point in an away game against Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

That remarkable achievement is just one more notable milestone in this young woman’s career on the court.

A four-year starter for Blue Hills, Delaporta is one of three superb players on the girls’ varsity to come in as a freshman (the others are Michaela Adams and Sinead Dacko).  She is a versatile three-time All-Star who plays three positions, said Coach Tom McGrath: point guard, shooting guard, and small forward.  An “unselfish player,” in his words, Delaporta was chosen as team captain in her senior year for her leadership role in helping the team’s underclassmen.  Her high school career scoring average is in double figures.

“Meg is an exceptional basketball player, but an even more exceptional person. She has been a leader on and off the court since day one,” noted McGrath.

Thanks to Delaporta’s contributions, as well as those of her talented teammates, the girls’ basketball team, the Lady Warriors, has enjoyed stunning success in recent years.  They had an undefeated regular season for 2012 – 2013, were the State Vocational Champion for 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, and Mayflower Conference Large Division Champion in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

“I had mixed emotions as I was nearing the 1000-point mark,” said Delaporta. “I was feeling excited to reach a goal that is shared by some talented Blue Hills basketball players. At the same time, I was glad to finally hit the shot that put me over 1000 because the pressure as it gets closer is tough to deal with because it starts to change your game.

“When someone reaches a scoring mark like 1000 points,’ she continued, “you know that doesn't happen by yourself. It takes everybody to make that happen, from the girls rebounding, setting picks, running the fast break or the coach busting me to practice my free throws. I know it sounds [like a] cliché, but if the whole team doesn't contribute, then I wouldn't have even gotten close to scoring 1000.”

Delaporta, who is studying Health Assisting at Blue Hills, “wants to attend a college as yet to be determined with hopes to study athletic training and to continue my basketball career,” she said.
