Two Canton Residents Receive Girl Scout Gold Award

Canton Girl Scouts are proud to announce that we have three recent recipients of the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, among the citizens of Canton: Samantha Rizzo, Alicia Healey, and Emily Buckley.  Though Samantha was away at college, Alicia and Emily were recently recognized at a Girl Scout Gold Award ceremony at the Canton Town Club.

The Gold Award requires young women to build life skills, explore career possibilities, increase leadership capabilities, and make a commitment toward self-improvement.  Many hours are dedicated to these prerequisites in preparation for completing an 80-hour Gold Award project. The Girl Scout Gold Award project builds upon these new skills and helps the Gold Award candidate to deliver a community service project that creates change and becomes ongoing, which helps the community and encompasses organizational, leadership and networking skills.

Only approximately 5 percent of all Girl Scouts nationwide earn this award each year.  We here in Canton are very proud that we have three young adults who have earned this highest honor this year.  Emily’s project, called Career Center Website Rehabilitation, centered on updating the community service resource sight at Canton High School.  Alicia’s project, entitled Mission Pet Safe, centered on an educational campaign for pet owners. And Samantha’s project, labeled Recycling Receptacles, centered on recycling awareness throughout town and worked toward the town providing recycling receptacles for our downtown area.

Speaking at the event were Selectwoman Avril Elkort, Girl Scout Gold Award Advisor Skip Carver, and Canton Girl Scout Co-coordinators, Linda Berman and Donna Iverson-Arata.  Assisting in the ceremony were Girl Scouts from all ages.  Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 75063, along with Cadette Isabella Luca performed the flag ceremony while Brownies from Troop 73408 recited the Girl Scout Promise and Law.  The whole ceremony was kept on track by Master of Ceremony Rebecca Hung, a graduate of MIT and former Gold Award recipient.
