Canton Seniors Strut Their Stuff

Seniors took part in folk and line dancing at St. Gerard's Church in Canton.

"Elvira" blared from the iPod at the church hall as Anjela Schatz called out, "grape right, scuff left, hitch, rock forward and back." It was only 1:30 Friday afternoon and these folks were already hitting the dance floor.

A group of 13 seniors from Canton, Stoughton, Mansfield and Sharon brought their dancing shoes and took part in an hour-long folk and line dancing class at in Canton.

Anjela Schatz of Arlington teaches the weekly class, which is run through the The creative dance specialist and folk dance instructor also teaches at Orchard Cove in Canton along with other venues around the state.

The beginner/intermediate class is for "all ages," she said. "Anybody and everybody are welcome."

The class, a great workout for all ages, is held in the church hall and has been taking place each Friday at 1:30 p.m. for the past year. Schatz said the class varies from nine to 13 dancers of all levels of experience. The class dances to international, country and American music.

Schatz has been dancing since she was nine and certified as a folk dance instructor since she was 17. She is trained in ballet, modern, jaz and tap, she said.

"It's so worth it," she said of teaching the group. "I love it."

The creative dance instructor teaches all ages–literally from age two to 92.
