Cruzamente with Lutchinha

The Open Book Coffeehouse closes out its seventh season on Saturday, July 14 at 7:30 pm, with five members of the all-female jazz combo Cruzamente, featuring Lutchinha. The Open Book Coffeehouse is located in the Community Room of the Canton Public Library, 786 Washington Street, Canton, Massachusetts.

Cruzamente is a Boston-based, all-female band led by lead singer Maria "Lutchinha" Neves, who hails from the island of Sao Vincente, an island in Cape Verde, off the coast of Africa. She has performed and recorded worldwide alongside other major Cape Verdean artists for over twenty years. Her latest release "Castanhinha" abounds with strong vocals, fearless traditional grooves and a wonderfully rich Cape Verdean texture, from the traditional morna and coladeira, to the Portuguese fado, to the Brazilian modinha.

The band’s name “Cruzamente” means “crossroads,” reflective of not only the variety of musical styles from Cape Verde that they perform, but also reflective of the rich instrumentation, the diverse band members nationalities and their varied musical backgrounds. The combination of Lutchinha, with her natural charisma and warm voice, and the individual talents within the band, bring a rich and original approach to both the traditional and contemporary songs they perform.
