Textile Arts Make Impression on Canton Campers

The Canton Visual Arts Center hosted textile artist Valarie Poitier.

Featured Announcement:

Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center welcomed textile artist Valarie Poitier as the visiting artist for Fabric Arts Week.Β  Valarie is a textile artist who does a little of everything including dyeing, painting, stitching, stenciling and monoprints. She has been a curator for the Studio Art Quilt Association and a workshop trainer and lecturer.

Poitier shared some of her unique work with our campers and taught them silk screening techniques. Using recycled materials such as cereal boxes and polyester curtains, the campers created their own screen frames. Campers searched for materials in nature to use as part of their designs such as flowers, twigs, and leaves. They sketched their design ideas on paper and if desired used hot glue to create relief for their projects.

Some campers chose to work using cut out designs to block areas of their design on the screen. Once the paint was applied and pressed through the screens, the campers saw first-hand what types of materials worked best for which designs. Poitier’s explanation of positive and negative space was easy to see once the process was underway. In the end, the completed projects ranged from t-shirts to banners. She made quite an impression.
