You Bought a House with a Pool - Now What?

Tips for new pool owners.

Maybe you with a pool over the winter and with summer approaching, you are wondering to do with it when you open it? Or maybe you are contemplating buying a home with a pool and are wondering how much work it will entail? Or perhaps, you have a pool but are looking for some tips to make life easier?

If so, I have a website recommendation for all of you: Poolcenter.com  It is not only a pool store, but there are links to articles and "how to" instructions for a variety of pool-related issues. And, they have a message board where members can ask questions and get answers from experts and other pool owners.

Several years ago when we were looking at houses, we looked at our current home in Canton- which has a pool. It was end of the summer, the pool was open and looked beautiful. In fact, my then three-year old daughter, upon seeing the pool, looked at me and asked if I had brought her bathing suit!  She thought we were there for a party! My husband, on the other hand, said that he thought the pool looked like a lot of work.  I told him to consider it less grass that he had to cut!  And so, we bought the house with the pool and I took on the job of being in charge of the pool.  He helps with opening and closing but regular pool maintenance is my job.

I used to take water samples to the pool store and ask their advice when I came upon an issue they could not solve, I went online and stumbled upon Poolcenter.  My life became much easier (well, at least as far as the pool was concerned.) I found out that a good test kit (and that does not mean those cheap test strips,) a few minutes of water testing and few simple items I could get at the grocery store–namely bleach and baking soda–was all I needed to keep my pool sparkling clean. No more trips to the pool store. No more trial and error.  No more expensive chemicals. In fact, pool maintenance has become quite quick and easy!

So, having a pool does not to mean a lot of work. Just spend some time learning some basic pool tips from the people at Poolcenter. And, instead of cutting more grass, spend more time enjoying that pool this summer!
