is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and sports are one approach many people choose to get their exercise. For people with back pain, sports can still be a viable option if they pay attention to their back. For others, knowing the type of strain sports places on the back may even help prevent a back injury. 

Did you know that up to 20% of all injuries that occur in sports involve the lower back or neck? Sports such as running or weightlifting commonly cause damage to the lower back while contact sports such as place the neck area at risk of injury.  With any activity, it’s important to contact your physician or chiropractor especially if you’re considering a new activity or routine.  Also, it’s important to stretch and warm up before engaging in sports. 

It’s also important to respect your body should you experience any pain during sports activities. While it’s usually ok to "play to tolerance", i.e., to a point of initial discomfort, playing through pain is never a good idea. The body's pain signals are usually a good indication to take a break, re-evaluate the activity or seek further advice. Consider chiropractic when making such health choices as chiropractic provides the body with structural improvements for better performance and fun during sports.
