5 Things, Aug. 28: Back to School in Canton, Grants through CAPE

Today's Weather: Showers and thunderstorms are likely before 3 p.m. today. Skies will otherwise be mostly cloudy with a high near 82, according to the National Weather Service.

1. If you haven't heard yet, we've announced the winners of the Readers' Choice 2012 . . . be sure to  as the best of Canton.

2. With the school year right around the corner, sports in Canton are nearly set to begin. And what better way to keep an eye on the season than to check out , which you, as Canton sports fans, can add to throughout the year!

3. All-Things Back to School: Ninth grade orientation will take place Monday, Aug. 27, at  gymnasium at 8 a.m., followed by a new student and transfer student orientation grades 10-12 at 10 a.m. The Canton School Committee will be meeting Thursday, Aug. 30 in the Canton High Distance Learning Lab. The first day for teachers, not students, will be Tuesday, Sept. 4. The first day of school for Canton students in grades 1-12 will be Wednesday, Sept. 5, and the first day of kindergarten will Thursday, Sept. 6.

4. The Canton Alliance for Public Education (CAPE) is a non-profit volunteer-run organization that provides grants to the Canton Public Schools to help fund programs and projects that are not able to be funded through the usual school budget. Find out more in .
