Five Things You Need to Know Today, Dec. 6

Why the Boston tree arrives, lighting the Canton tree, capital requests and classical music.

1. Ever been to Seattle? Fog, cloudy, a good chance of showers, high temperature in the 50s, a light breeze off Woonsocket Sound.

2. Consider the history of the tree. This day in 1917, ships gathered in the harbor of Halifax, Nova Scotia for a convoy to bring supplies to Europe during World War I. A collision happened at 8:45am involving French ship Mont Blanc. At 9:05am the ship's cargo of bomb-making substances exploded. The blast levelled 2.5 miles of the town. Up to 2,000 people died. Communities around Boston organized a relief train filled with food, water, medical supplies and aid workers. It left Boston at 10pm that night, travelled through a blizzard and arrived at 3am Dec. 8 in Halifax, the first relief to the smoldering town. If you go to Boston Common for the lights, you'll see a grand tree as the centerpiece. It's an annual gift from a thankful Nova Scotia.

3. Go see the local tree lighting. Canton Town Hall, 6pm.

4. Get involved. Tree lit, selectmen will meet at 7pm. They will consider a no parking proposal for the north side of Ames Ave., an all alcohol license for Gourmet Garden at 95 Washington Street, and capital funding requests from police, fire, DPW, finance, the building department, conservation, recreation, the library and the health department.

5. Listen to new classics. The Sharon Community Chamber Orchestra will perform beggining at 7:30pm in the Sharon Middle School, 75 Mountain Street, Sharon. Musical Director Michael Korn will conduct the program, which will include 20th and 21st century works by Prokofiev, Bartok, Sibelius, Karidoyanes, de Falla and Hindemith. Audience members are invited to a reception that will follow the concert. Now in its ninth season, the Sharon Community Chamber Orchestra includes local musicians ranging from students to seniors. The growing orchestra furnishes the community with a source of musical enjoyment while providing its members with a vehicle for enjoying and developing their musical talents. Adult tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Student and senior tickets are $5, or a family ticket may be purchased for $20. For tickets or additional information, call 781-784-4281 or email sharonorchestra@gmail.com.
