Five Things You Need to Know Today, Dec. 8

Five Things You Need to Know Today is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance.

1. Some might hear that old rhyme about rain going away. It will come back another day. It's a new day when glaciers fall from the sky. More immediately, the National Weather Service predicts temperatures in Canton will not come close to freezing today. Expect a flooded Washington Street by Shepard's Pond, then look out for black ice as the rain stops and the temperatures drop overnight to 29 degrees. The State Police say, "Of particular concern is black ice, which may affect much of interior southern New England, even as far southeast as metropolitan Boston and possibly into Rhode Island. Black ice results when there is not enough time for leftover standing water to evaporate before temperatures drop near or below freezing."

2. Consider our history. This day in 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt asked Congress for a declaration of war against Japan, a day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1969, 28 years later, President Richard Nixon declared the war in Vietnam "was ending." The next year the U.S. invaded Cambodia. The war ended in January of 1973.

3. Learn how to protect yourself from scams and fraud. Amy Schram of the Better Business Bureau will present Scams and Fraud at 7:30pm, in the 's Community Room.
