Five Things You Need to Know Today, Oct. 17

If you think gas prices are high now....

1. Enjoy the clear fall weather, the rain will return. Today expect sun and a high off 66 with a 15 mile perhour breeze off the Worcester hills. Clear and 45 tonight.

2. Consider our (painful) history. While OPEC (Organization of Oil Exporting Countries) met in Vienna, Egypt and Syria attacked Isreal, what became known as the Yom Kippur War. When Israel, with help from the United States and others, began to win, OPEC ministers, this day in 1973, voted to cut oil exports to all countries that aided Israel. They agreed to cut exports by 5 percent a month until Israel returned land it annexed during the Arab-Israeli War six years prior. A full embargo against the United States went into effect in December when Israel refused to cede the land. Gas and oil prices quadrupled. The federal government imposed gasoline rationing. Lines at gas stations stretched for blocks. So much siphoning from gas tanks happened, locking gas caps came into demand. The embargo was lifted in March of 1974 when Secretary of State Henry Kissinger negotiated an agreement between Syria and Israel, but prices never returned to pre-embargo levels.

3. Mark your calendar. Congressman Stephen Lynch will come to town Thursday to meet with residents. He will be outside Town Hall from 2 to 3:30pm.
