Getting Used to the College Life

Time management skills are key to this Canton High grad.

It is only the and I am already learning some valuable lessons. For starters, do not take your parents for granted. Although they may get on your nerves or tell you what to do too much, they do love you and when you are away from them you WILL miss them.

Moving to college is a whole new lifestyle. There are no parents around, you will not have you big, comfortable bed, you do not have a car, and you rarely have alone time. Time management is crucial at college. At college, you have your group of friends around you all the time and because of this, there is constantly different events going on.

This makes it really difficult to find time to complete your homework, study, and call home to your family. I do miss my family, but sometimes a couple days will go on without me calling them. This is not because I do not want to talk to them. It is simply because I am way to busy. I have so much to tell my family and there are a lot of times that I would like to call home.So Mum, if you are reading this...I do not mean to go a couple days without calling and I do miss you!

When my classes first started here, I had nothing going on and therefore, I had a lot of time to get my homework done. Now it is three weeks later and I am involved in numerous clubs plus the homework load is getting heavier and I am finding that my plentiful time has rapidly decreased.

Time management has become key and I find myself wishing that my high school had classes on how to properly manage your time. During the weekdays I go from classes to studying at the library to a meeting for one of the numerous clubs I am in and then to intramural volleyball that goes until about 9:00 or 9:30 at night. So, when do I do my homework?!

Here is when time management comes in to play. I have finally decided that what is best for me is to squeeze in some homework in between my class periods. When my classes are finally over, I grab something to eat and head off to the library. While studying at the library, I knock one thing off of my homework list, which is to prepare for my exams. If I finish studying early, I start some other homework in the beautiful and peaceful barn-like library at Colby-Sawyer. Then off I go to my clubs and volleyball games.

It may seem to you like this is a stressful and hectic day, but it keeps me going, helps so I can make a lot of friends and it also prevents me from getting some home sickness. So, no we are back at square one...the sad fact that I do not call home enough. Maybe it is time to redo my time management schedule again so that I can squeeze a phone call home to my lovely family in there. Wish me luck!
