Roundup: Former Employee Charged with Breaking into Canton Facility; CHS Graduates Class of 2013

A look at the top headlines from the past week.

A former employee of the Department of Public Health (DPH) has been arrested and arraigned in connection with breaking into a Canton DPH facility on multiple occasions and stealing agency gas cards to purchase motor fuel, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Wednesday.

Mikel W. Beacham, age 33, of Randolph, was arrested this past Tuesday night in Canton without incident by State Police assigned to the AG’s Office. Upon arresting Beacham, authorities found a DPH gas card in his possession.

Beacham is charged with Breaking and Entering in the Daytime with Intent to Commit a Felony, Larceny over $250, and Stealing in a Building.

Knowing their Customers Key to Cassie's Corner's Success

Locally owned convenience and grocery stores aren’t all that common these days, but some local businesses are thriving.

In the age of Mobil on the Run and Hess Expresses, Christine Woodard is continuing to thrive in Canton at Cassie’s Corner Store.

“I had a friend in high school who lived down the street and I always used to come here,” she said.

Woodard bought the property for Cassie’s Corner Store 20 years ago when the property was vacant, and she’s built a good local business out of it.

Stoughton's Ahavath Torah Pulls Out of Synagogue Merger Talks

Tuesday, June 4 could become a very important date in the history of Stoughton’s oldest synagogue.

At a special congregation meeting that night, which was attended by over 100 congregants, the members of Ahavath Torah Congregation overwhelmingly voted in favor of removing ATC from a proposed regionalization process with Temple Beth Emunah in Brockton and Temple Beth Am in Randolph.

Major Motion Picture Will be Filming in Dedham This Summer

The Dedham Board of Selectmen had a discussion with Charlie Harrington and Jeremy Fiske, part of the film crew who will working on "The Judge," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall.

The selectmen wanted to discuss the road closures and how Dedham Police will help with traffic. The film crew plans on filming on High Street, in front of the court house and The First Church on July 11 and 12.

Community Rallies Around Walpole Baseball Coach Diagnosed with Cancer

In his 34-year tenure as Walpole’s varsity baseball coach, Bill Tompkins has seen it all: from those years when our entire town couldn’t stop talking about awe-inspiring seasons, to the years of talk about nothing but scandals. So with the good comes the bad—and this year is no exception.

Almost a year since recording his 500th win as WHS baseball coach, 61-year-old Tompkins has recently been diagnosed with cancer—a diagnosis that not only shook the baseball team but the school and the community as well. And in response to this recent news, the students and the faculty have come together to give Tompkins the support he needs during his first rounds of chemotherapy.
