Verizon Employees Picket Outside Cobb's Corner

Union president: "This is about Middle America and jobs overseas."

Striking Verizon landline employees have become a fixture at Cobb's Corner, where Sharon, Canton and Stoughton meet.

Employees are at 27 Verizon locations in the region, Communication Workers of America Local 1400 President Don Trementozzi said Monday.

"The public has been very supportive, because this is about Middle America and jobs overseas," he said.

About 45,000 Verizon Communications employees from Massachusetts to Virginia began striking over the weekend of Aug. 7 .

Union members said the telecom giant has a list of demands that are out of line with comparable contracts in other industries. At a time when Verizon had $1.61 billion in quarterly profit last quarter, they're expecting workers to give up far more than what's fair, they said.

Locally, employees plan to picket this week at these Verizon locations: Canton LPC, at 95 Washington St. (Cobb's Corner); Foxboro LPC, at Patriot Place on Route 1; and Verizon Wireless, at Mansfield Crossing on Route 140.

"This is probably the most successful mobilization strike in the history of the CWA," Trementozzi said.
