During their fourth grade year, JFK students met with
professional author Steven Krasner. Over
the course of a three-day workshop, Krasner collaborated with the students and
assisted them in writing their original play. Krasner’s participation was a
unique extension of the Author in Residence program, funded at every grade level
by the JFK CAPT.
Barbara Carbone, fourth grade teacher and director of the
production, continued to work with the students to edit the play. Students added characters and dialogue to the
play, under her direction. Mrs. Carbone, who has directed the fifth grade
students in the play for many years, saw this as a unique learning opportunity
that would further enhance the experience of the play by teaching story and
character development.

While the fifth grade play is an annual right of passage that
involves the entire class of more than 80 students in either the cast or crew,
this year marks the first time an original play has been performed.
Krasner has written “Why Not Call It Cow Juice,” “The Longest
Game,” “Have a Nice Nap, Humphrey,” “Play Ball Like The Pro’s,” and “Play Ball
Like The Hall of Famers.” For more
