Pond Hockey Tournament Returns to Winter Skate at Patriot Place

Puck drops on fourth annual recreational hockey tournament Sunday, Feb. 9.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Lace up the skates, grab a stick and hit the ice for Winter Skate’s fourth annual pond hockey tournament at Patriot Place.

The puck drops on Sunday, Feb. 9, with opening round action on the popular outdoor ice rink presented by Harvard Pilgrim HealthCare. The annual tournament features open air, open ice and open goals in the shadow of Gillette Stadium.

“Our pond hockey tournament has become an exciting winter tradition at Patriot Place and always is a blast for participants and spectators alike,” said Patriot Place General Manager Brian Earley. “We are extremely happy to have the support of Harvard Pilgrim HealthCare to host these games for a fourth season.”

New to the four-on-four, no-checking recreational tournament this year is the inclusion of youth divisions.

“We are thrilled to be adding the youth divisions to this year’s tournament,” said Earley. “We have so many youth teams using the Winter Skate ice for practices; it just made sense to have the kids experience what the men’s teams have for the past three years.”

The men’s and youth tournaments will consist of up to 32 teams each in a double-elimination format.

Each team is guaranteed to play at least three games over the week-long event (Feb. 9-16), culminating with a championship game on Sunday, Feb. 16. The weekday games will take place under lights. Each game is 30 minutes in length and consists of two 15-minute periods. Teams can have as many as eight players on their roster.

The entry fee is $320 per team. Rules and registration information are available at www.patriot-place.com/hockeytournament.

Winter Skate at Patriot Place presented by Harvard Pilgrim HealthCare is located at Patriot Place in Foxborough, Mass., adjacent to Route 1 and near the Renaissance Hotel & Spa.
