Barn Babies at Learning Circle Preschool

Children gain confidence around animals and take on a caring role towards them when they have opportunities to play, touch, and hold baby animals through programs like Barn Babies.

Learning Circle Preschool recently invited Barn Babies, a traveling petting zoo, to come to the school. Children in each class were able to hold, feel, and play with bunnies, kittens, puppies, a goat, a pig, and a chicken. The smaller animals were wrapped in baby receiving blankets so that both the animals and children felt safe together.

Some of the children were a bit shy interacting with the animals, and not everyone had previous experience with animals. Teachers and Barn Babies staff worked together to help each child find a comfortable way to engage with the animals – by modeling gentle touch, and holding the animals quietly and closely while talking with the children about each animal and encouraging them to participate. Bringing a program like Barn Babies to the school is a great way to help children feel safe with animals. It’s great fun to play with them, and also a good opportunity to take on a caring role.
