Nurse Laura Kimberly of Canton Discusses Beauty Secrets

When it comes to beauty products, this must have item might surprise you.

Canton resident Laura Kimberly left Children's Hospital in 2009, where she worked in Cardiac Intensive Care and Cardiac Critical Care as a registered nurse, to pursue her passion for aesthetics under the medical direction of Dr. Joseph Russo, F.A.C.S.

Kimberly is a Certified Advanced Cosmetic Injector by American Aesthetics Institute and a Member of the American Medical Aesthetic Professionals with over 10 years experience with injection and injection techniques.

There are many options to plastic surgery, and surprisingly, an old standby is something we cannot live without when it comes to skin care.

"Tinted sunblock (zinc oxide); 90 percent of aging is caused by the sun’s damage to skin cells," said Kimberly, when asked what would she need if stranded on a desert island. "If I wasn’t stranded on a desert island, the one product I cannot live without is retinol. It is the only topical, besides sunblock, that is proven to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. You cannot use this product and go in the sun, so it definitely wouldn’t work on a desert island".

Patch: The beauty industry is a huge business with over the counter miracle creams, or so they say. But how do these creams work or do they work?

Laura Kimberly: "Anything over the counter, no matter how much it costs, cannot penetrate into the dermal layer (living cells) of skin. It only works on dead cells. Once a product passes into the living later it becomes a pharmaceutical. Only doctors and spa’s with medical directors can sell pharmaceutical grade products. I know everyone is looking for a face cream miracle. They do exist. But not at CVS or Nordstrom. I highly recommend seeing an esthetician. My favorite brand is Image. The products cost between $20-$100, and they actually work".

Patch: People are moving away from invasive procedures, and are moving to more noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures. What are some of those trends?

Laura Kimberly: "One of the newest treatments that I fully endorse is Ulthera. It’s ultra sound therapy that tightens the neck and face. Since it is ultrasound, it can penetrate deeper than a laser".

Patch: What’s the newest trends with aesthetics?

Laura Kimberly: Fillers are another alternative to surgery and not only help to eliminate fine lines or wrinkles but can also fill in acne scars. Juvedérm, Perlane, Radiesse™ (Formerly Radiance™) and Restylane® are just a few of the products offered.

Editor's note: Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Kimberly works with many different organizations and volunteer groups focused on women’s health.
