Creative Arts Outdoors in Canton this Summer
Summer camp in Canton offers creative arts outdoors with a variety of themes to chose from.
Canton’s Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon invites the community to discover its new arts offerings.
“Our Wild at Art Camp nurtures creativity, sense of wonder and an understanding of the natural world,” says Education Coordinator Tammis Coffin. This summer, guest artists will enrich camp sessions with fine arts offerings in pottery, painting, mosaic, and sculpture. The camp has a new kiln as a result of generous donations from the Canton community, and opportunities to work in clay will be part of most camp sessions.
Education Coordinator Tammis Coffin says, “We have some wonderful summer opportunities for campers ages 3 to 13 and for Leaders in Training, ages 14 to 16. Our most popular session this year is our theme of Treasure Hunting and Treasure Mapping.” In this session, campers have the opportunity to follow treasure maps and design their own. They create treasures out of clay and other natural materials. Another popular session focuses on wings, and combines learning about art and science with “Wings of Bright Colors” for younger campers, ages 3 to 6 “Wings of the Forest” and “Wings of Clay” for ages 8 to 13.

You don’t need to be a young person to take part in natural arts learning at the Museum of American Bird Art. A new series of art classes, open studios, and family drop-in times is planned for all ages that will focus on creative arts linked to the natural world. Summer educational programs will align with the current exhibition of wood carvings and related themes of water birds and waterways. Stay posted for more information at massaudubon.org/maba.
The Museum of American Bird Art (formerly called the Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center) is located across the street from the Canton High School. “Many of our regulars describe our 124 acre nature preserve as the best part of Canton,” says Coffin. “It really is the center of town when you look at a map.”
