Mommy’s Time Out: Children 1: Mom 0

Hats off to working moms in and out of the home!

Working in the public school system definitely has its perks. We work roughly 180 days, have every possible holiday off, three weeks vacation and enjoy summers off. Not to mention the convenient hours making that much easier. I am home by 3:00 p.m. on most days to spend time with my three lovely daughters, while picking up the house, cooking dinner and completing the bedtime routines.  Honestly, if not for working in the field of education, I do not think I could manage the day-to-day demands of on top of working full time.

In saying that, I am on week two of my fabulous summer off.  This wonderful time with my children gives me the utmost respect for stay-at-home moms.  Week two and I am certain that taking care of my children full-time is much more difficult than working outside the home. There is no “not until I have had my coffee,” there is no “lunch break.”  There is no quiet computer time. There is no adult interaction without children screaming and pulling at my leg.

On the rare occasion that the children find something that keeps their attention for 30 minutes, I am running around cleaning up the sippy cups, fixing meals, doing laundry or tripping over toys.  During these sought after summer months I need not go to the gym, as I do not physically or mentally rest until my head hits the pillow and I fall asleep, attempting to catch up on my once favorite shows. I somehow seem to have more time when I am working those 180 days caring for other people’s children.

It seems I have the best of both worlds. Working those 180 days makes me value my time off with my children doing mommy things, while my time off with my children makes me value working those 180 days. Hats off to working moms in and out of the home!
