Obituary: Isadore Hazel

Mr. Isadore Hazel served in the United States Navy in World War II and spent 34 years in the reserves.

Isadore Hazel, Ret. Captain US Naval Reserve, 89, of Canton, formerly of Milton, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2013.

Isadore was the beloved husband of 58 years of the late Barbara (Goldstein) Halzel, son of the late Louis Halzel and the late Sarah (Bass) Halzel Feingold. loving father of Lois and Arnie Freedman of Sharon, Cindy and Dr. Joseph Levy of Sharon, and Amy and Kenneth Willis of Needham, cherished grandfather of Scott and Becky, Melissa and Michael, Allison, Jennifer, Juliana and Daniel. He was predeceased in by brothers Lawrence, George and Jack Halzel.

Isadore was a graduate of Brown University and Boston University Graduate School of Management. He spent four years in active service in the US Navy during World War II, followed by 37 years in the US Naval Reserve, where he rose proudly from Ensign to the rank of Captain. Isadore worked for the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory developing the Polaris missile guidance system, and as project manager at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory on the guidance and navigation systems for the Apollo lunar landing and Trident missile guidance systems.

Isadore was a senior lecturer at Northeastern University for 25 years. He was an active member of Temple Shalom of Milton, serving on the board of directors and as PTA president. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans and a supporter of many charities. He enjoyed tutoring and mentoring young people.

Services were at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel in Canton on Monday, June 10, followed by interment at Agudath Israel Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Shiva will take place following interment through 9 p.m. at the home of Lois and Arnie Freedman; on Tuesday June 11th and Wednesday June 12th from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the home of Lois and Arnie Freedman; and on Thursday June 13 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. and Friday June 14, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the home of Amy and Kenneth Willis.
