Updated: Bomb Threat Called into Hansen School Not Credible

Canton Police arrested a 12-year-old for calling in a fake bomb scare to the elementary school.

A 12-year-old Canton student was arrested yesterday after calling in a fake bomb threat to the . Canton Police and Fire departments responded to the 3:39 p.m.  incident at the Pecunit Street school Wednesday.

said the child, who was not a student at the elementary school, called in the scare after school had ended for the day. The building was mostly empty, except for a handful of staff and after-school students, according to Superintendent of Schools . "It was evacuated immediately," the superintendent said.

were "able to trace the number back and he admitted doing it," Berkowitz said of the juvenile. "He's charged and I'm confident that the school is doing something (to discipline him.)"

Although it was just a scare, "it's still dangerous and costly when someone does something like that," the police chief said. Canton Police rushed to the scene to investigate. "You want to rule out that it is not the real thing. It is definitely dangerous."

The superintendent agreed. "It was an unfortunate incident and we are thankful nothing came of it," Granatino said. "It's something that causes great concern in the community."

District rules and regulations will be followed in this case, as in any disciplinary matter, he said. "This is a school matter and a police matter," he said. "Protocols are in place."
