Canton Fire Chief Discusses Fire Safety

Fire Chief Charles Doody spoke with Immigrants in Norwood recently about fire safety.

Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody on Friday discussed fire safety with students at the Norwood Adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

Norwood ESOL, offered through Blue Hills Regional Technical School’s Adult Basic Education program, provides English classes for adult immigrants living in Norwood, Canton, Stoughton, Sharon, and Walpole. The students represent 26 countries from around the world.

Chief Doody provided the students with important information about smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire hazards such as candles, cigarettes, and electrical cords. 

He also showed a video demonstrating the power of one lit match in a wastebasket – a fire can spread through an entire living room in less than three minutes.

ESOL classes are for non-native speakers who need to learn how to speak, read, and write effectively in English.  Classes are offered at 190 Vanderbilt Avenue, Norwood.  Four levels of instruction are offered Tuesdays through Fridays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.   For information, please call 718-769-5848 or go to
