Canton Fire Department Responds to Pecunit Street Blaze

Wet roads made for a slippery scene for the CFD ladder truck.

Responding to their in one week, Canton firefighters battled a one-alarm house fire at 119 Pecunit Street this afternoon.

"We've been busy," Canton Fire Chief said. "Two fires in one week. We're usually looking at one fire a month. It's unusual."

The afternoon blaze was quickly contained, Doody said at the snowy, wet scene.

Canton Police received a report of smoke coming from a house on Raven Road and Pecunit Street at about 1:30 p.m.

Canton Firefighters from Engine 2 were the first to arrive on scene, Doody said. They managed to contain the fire to one room. Engine 6 arrived and the crew put the fire out within about ten minutes, he said.

"The fire damage was contained to one room" of the home, the chief said. "There was significant smoke and water damage throughout the house."

Damages are estimated to be about a couple hundred thousand dollars, according to the fire chief.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Police, and Canton Fire Department, Doody said. "It does not appear to be suspicious," he said.

No one was injured in the blaze and no residents were home at the time of the fire. A female occupant did arrive on scene as the blaze was being put out. She was overwhelmed a the scene and taken to Norwood hospital as a precaution, Chief Doody said.

The CFD Ladder truck had a tough time making it out of the steep, icy driveway at the home. Interstate Towing had to be called in to tow the ladder truck out.

The Norwood Fire Department assisted Canton Fire at the scene, while Westwood, Stoughton and Randolph Fire Departments covered the Canton fire stations.
