Police and educators are teaming up to make school safety a priority.

“We are bridging the gap between school and police,” Yeaton said.

Educators, police officers, school nurses and social workers from all over Massachusetts and some from greater New England attend the conference each year, he said.

Last year, 225 attendees were at the two-day conference. At the conference, school and law enforcement officials discuss all elements of school safety issues, Yeaton said.

A member of the FBI will be presenting this year, along with Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone and a representative from the Anti-Defamation League. Discussions are focused on a range of topics from to gangs to shootings in a school setting.

Yeaton will be teaching a workshop on social media/internet and a workshop for school resource officers, he said.

“It’s important to me that I practice what I preach and advocate for school safety,” Yeaton said. We are just trying to keep kids safe in school.”

This is the largest training that the MJPOA, a 50-year-old nonprofit, holds each year. For educators of law enforcement officials interested in attending, there is still time to sign up. The cost for the two days of workshops is $159, which includes lunch each day, Yeaton noted.

School resource officers, probation officers, school police officers, guidance counselors, nurses, crisis team members, principals, assistant principals and school superintendents are encouraged to attend the training.

The workshop will also feature breakout groups that will cover topics such as graffiti and gangs, the internet, bullying, juvenile law and search and seizure, Yeaton said.
