Canton Spared Much of the Storm-Related Damages

The two-day snow and ice-filled storm brought roofs down and caused flooding in the Bay State.

This week’s caused chaos across the Bay State, including Easton, with under the weight of the snow and ice and flooding in several areas. Canton was spared any major damage except for one unlucky business on Turnpike Street.

responded to a partial roof collapse at 555 Turnpike Street Wednesday. The awning at the business park’s front entrance collapsed around 11:00 a.m., according to fire officials.

“The collapse was related to the significant weight from the snow and ice that has accumulated this winter,” Canton Fire said. “No injuries occurred.”

Due to the storm, no employees were in the building, which houses several companies including . “Fortunately work was cancelled for employees otherwise we might have had a different outcome,” Driscoll said.

The awning is over the main entrance-way to the building and damage was isolated to the awning, Driscoll said. “The remainder of the building is fine and is open with the exception of the front lobby being isolated from all personnel and visitors.”

and Canton Building Inspector Ed Walsh were at the scene and evaluated the safety of the building. “The building was deemed safe and could remain open,” Driscoll stated.

The building inspector and fire chief recommend checking roofs for proper drainage, excessive snow load and to be sure to check the inside of your home or building for any new cracks in the walls.
