Head-on Collision Requires Airlift to Hospital

A passenger car and an ambulance collided Sunday night, requiring an emergency airlift to Boston Medical Center. Police closed the road for three hours.

Two people were air lifted to Boston Medical Center for serious injuries after a passenger car and a Fallon Ambulance collided on Route 138, Turnpike Street, on Sunday night. A third person was transported by ground to Beth Isreal Hospital.

The Canton Fire Department received a call at 7:45pm from Fallon reporting the company had lost contact with its two-person crew. The ambulance had just transported a patient to Orchard Grove. It had no occupants other than the crew.

"There was entrapment in both vehicles requiring extraction with the Jaws of Life," Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody said. "There were crews from several towns on the scene because of the complexity of the extraction."

Two Canton engine crews - six firefighters - and a two-person Canton ambulance crew responded. Fire and ambulance crews from Stoughton and Randolph assisted. Engine crews from Milton and Norwood covered Canton stations.

A helicopter landing zone was set up at the nearest parking lot, 555 Turnpike Street, to airlift the injured.

"It was a very complex call," Doody said. "All the fire and police crews did an outstanding job."

The State Police Accident Reconstruction Team kept the road closed until 10:30pm.
