JFK School Continues to Talk Safety with Students in Canton

The Canton elementary school held an assembly with students today.

After an 11-year-old student let off an onto a JFK Elementary School bus yesterday afternoon, administrators and police reiterated safety at school with the students.

A 10:00 a.m. assembly held at the school today included presentations by Interim Principal Assistant Principal Meredith Carey, the Canton Police Department and a school psychologist.

In a statement released Friday, Chamberlain said the assembly addressed several issues including:

  • "The seriousness of the violation of the school’s safety policy was emphasized.
  • The students were told that discipline was handled according to the school handbook and district policies.
  • Additionally, there was significant discussion about making bad decisions.
  • Student questions were answered."

After the assembly and after student discussions, administrators found out that several students had seen the air gun at school but did not report it, according to Chamberlain.

"We will be certain that the message is repeated loudly and often," the interim principal stated. "If you see something at the school that makes you uncomfortable, tell an adult."

Chamberlain asked parents to "reinforce this message" at home.

On Thursday night, released a statement about the incident that occurred on school bus E on the afternoon ride home.

“During the ride home, a student was found with an air-soft bead gun and two children riding on the bus were hit by beads, but fortunately their injuries are minor,” Chamberlain stated. "The bus driver immediately pulled over, intervened and contacted the police.”

According to the Canton Police log, the 11-year-old juvenile was issued a court summons on a charge of assault and battery at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at the JFK School on Dedham Street
