AvalonBay Now in Charge of Randolph Street Project

The apartment complex in Canton is now being developed by AvalonBay.

Canton's Randolph Street Project is now in the hands of developer AvalonBay. At last week's meeting, the selectmen heard an update on the project, which will bring 196 upscale apartments to the town.

AvalonBay Communities, Inc., is a well-known developer in the Commonwealth, with upscale and luxury apartment communities in Sharon, Randolph, Quincy,Β  Weymouth, Boston, Hingham, and Cohasset, among many others.

Many of the Avalon communities feature a pool, fitness center, and one and two-bedroom apartments, according to their website.

Attorneys Paul Carroll and Mark Bobrowski gave an update to the BOS.

AvalonBay is committed to attaching a new water main for all the existing users on Randolph Street, according to Bobrowski. The company will pay $75,000 for this work, he noted. They will also be responsible for paying $200,000 to the town for traffic improvements, he said.

The developer is also considering adding a light at York and Randolph streets, and working on getting an estimate for that, he said.

Selectmen Gerald A. Salvatori, Jr., said the town has been battling this project for years.Β

"We've exhausted all we could" in court appeals to veto the project, he said. "But in good news, Avalon is well-known in the industry and has high quality products."

"It's been a long, long, hard battle," Attorney Carroll said. "It is what it is. The law is what it is. We respect it."
