Canton Center Station Overhauls Approved As Part of State Bill

Gov. Deval Patrick this week signed the state's Transportation Bond Bill, which authorized a number of transportation and infrastructure and improvement projects throughout the Commonwealth.

One such initiative that received funding is a project involving overhauls at the Canton Center Commuter Rail Station. Specifically, the bill allots $500,000 to improve pedestrian access and safety at the station, while another $300,000 is for capital improvements.

In total, the bill authorizes a total investment of $1.5 billion for Fiscal Year 2013, including $885 million in state funds that leverage federal funds for state road, bridge, rail and regional transit projects, according to an announcement Friday afternoon.

The Massachusetts Senate and House passed the legislation for the bill, which included measures sponsored by Sen. Brian A. Joyce and State Rep. Bill Galvin (D-Canton).

"Solid infrastructure and transportation systems are key factors in promoting safe and healthy communities and creating communities that are attractive places for families and companies when they’re looking to put down roots,” said Joyce in a statement.

Added Galvin, "This is a great opportunity for the town to upgrade their infrastructure. It will improve public safety and traffic flow, while at the same time help to maintain and attract business.”
