Canton Fire Department Receives Grant

The Canton Fire Department received a grant to purchase new radios.

The will be purchasing new radios thanks to a federal grant.

The CFD received a $60,000 grant to replace the old radios, Canton Fire Chief told the Canton Board of Selectmen last week.

"The good news is the grant came through," Doody told the Canton Board of Selectmen at the last meeting.

The expenditure has been removed from the CFD's budget, he noted.

The department will move the allotted funding to a different line item, to start replacing the old radio master box wired system, he said. Over the next several years, if approved, the CFD would phase out the old, wired, alarm system to a radio transmission system, he said.

The CFD was one of six departments that received grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grants, according to FireEngineering.com.

Representative Stephen Lynch congratulated the CFD in a statement to FireEngineering.com.

"Our firefighters are on the front lines every day, and they need the proper equipment and training to do their jobs effectively. With our cities and towns struggling during these difficult economic times, these federal fire grants are crucial," said Rep. Lynch. "I commend Chief Richard Francis and the Brockton Fire Department and Chief Charles Doody and the Canton Fire Department for their hard work and diligence in securing these grants. The funding will go a long way in helping our firefighters keep their communities and themselves safe."

The next Canton Board of Selectmen meeting is tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall.
