Highlights from the Canton Board of Selectmen: Town Meeting Warrant Articles
A few highlights from the April 19 meeting.
There is less than one week to go before Canton's and the wrapped up final warrant business last night. The Board of Selectmen has been discussing the 44 warrant articles over the past several months, and gave their final recommendations at last night's meeting on the remaining articles.
In a 3-2 vote, the board voted to support Article 34, the .
This tax would add a .75 % tax on meals in Canton. If you spend $100 on a meal, you would pay an extra 75 cents on your bill if this article were passed at Town Meeting. This article sparked much debate among the Board of Selectmen members, the Finance Director Murgia and Town Administrator William Friel when first discussed in March. Selectman John J. Connolly said the extra 75 cents or so would not deter folks from eating out in Canton. “If the food is good and the beer is cold,” he said. “I think we should do it.”

Last night, Chairman Victor Del Vecchio supported the article. "I do think we could use the money," he said.
Vice Chair Avril T. Elkort opposed the article. "It's just another tax," she said. "It's not worth it to tax the people anymore."

The board took a 4-1 vote, opposing support of Article 28, the Stretch Energy Code; supported Article 32, Amending the General Bylaws for CPC, 5-0; and voted 4-1 against supporting Article 39, the .
Elkort said that with the tax rate, poor economy and foreclosures in town, Canton residents can not afford any more taxes. "It's not the time to do it," she said.
Selectman Bob Burr said there is "not a particular project we are overly concerned about" in order to support the extra taxes.
