Highlights from the Canton Board of Selectmen: Update on the Res and Tax Rates

The board set Canton's tax rates and discussed updates on Reservoir Pond.

Canton residents will see a slight increase in their tax rates next year. The approved tax rates for 2012-2013 at this week's meeting. The BOS approved the recommended rates set by the Canton Board of Assessors.

The BOS approved a residential rate of $11.91 (up from $11.55) and a commercial and personal property rate of $23.04. The next re-evaluation for the town will be in FY 2014, according to the Board of Assessors.

Chairman of the Board of Assessors Rocco Digirolamo said there are currently 5,316 single-family homes in Canton. There are 1,313 condos in Canton, with the average assessment of a condo being $228,734, he stated. The average, singe-family home is assessed at $464, 008, he noted.

Next year's tax bill for an average, single-family homeowner will be $5,526, Digirolamo noted. That is an increase of about $182 from this year.

In neighboring Stoughton, the town set its tax rate for FY 2014 at $14.50 for residential and $25.24 for commercial, the chair said.

The top taxpayers in Canton are NSTAR, who paid $1 million in personal property taxes and Reebok, who paid $981,000 in real estate taxes, Digirolamo said.

This year, the town saw $682,194 in new growth due to the addition of eight new homes, according to the assessors. The total taxable valuation for the town is $3.954 billion.

  • In other news, the Board of Selectmen approved posting two signs, as part of the Massachusetts Safe Haven Act, at the police and fire headquarters.
  • The board received an update on the . Member Gerald A. Salvatori, Jr. told the board that due to ongoing discussions with the pond owners, "we've pretty much lost this construction season." The town is continuing to speak to the state Office of Dam Safety regarding the issues of the property owners fixing the dam to be in accordance with state regulations, he noted. The update is "not a substantive update, regrettably," Salvatori said.

The next Board of Selectmen meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 22.
