Ever drive by Neponset Street and wonder what is being built
near the Interstate 95 on-ramp?
The former Canton Airport site is being transformed into a multi-million dollar public park.
The park will have a loop trail, a central lawn area, a small entrance parking lot, a shade pavilion, extensive native plantings and wetland restoration.
Bill Hickey, a DCR spokesman said the park will be completed by the end of November. He also said a gathering deck, three flag poles and a signage kiosk will be added to the completed park in June 2014.
The DCR had previously explored the possibility of adding playing fields on the site but the idea was turned down by the public.
The new park will be named 1st Lt. Arthur E. Farnham, Jr., and SSgt. Thomas M. Connolly, Jr. Memorial Park, in honor of two World War II heroes and friends who met while working as mechanics during the heyday of the Canton Airport in the 1930s.
