As the Massachusetts Senate debates a number of proposed amendments to the Fiscal Year 2014 budget this week, two measures co-sponsored by Senator Brian A. Joyce have passed that would bring more state funding to Canton.

The first would increase unrestricted general government aid to Canton by $42,875 for a total of $1,856,687, a figure previously agreed to by the House of Representatives. The second would increase the payments in lieu of taxes (PILOT) for Canton next year.

Canton has previously received $1,197,796 in PILOT payments as a result of legislation authored by Joyce that requires state payments to the town for the loss of potential tax revenue from Blue Hills Reservation land in Canton.

“Returning state tax dollars to Canton takes pressure off local taxpayers, and helps fund our schools, public safety, and public works,” said Joyce.
