Updates from the Canton School Committee: Field Trips, a TV Show and a Principal Search

The Canton School Committee approved field trips for the upcoming year, received an update on the principal search for the Hansen and received a donation.

December was a busy month for Canton schools. Before breaking for the , the Canton School Committee and town meeting warrant articles. The committee also heard updates from the superintendent and approved field trips.

The updates included:

  • The school district in continuing the search for a new principal for the Hansen School. Currently, is the interim principal. The job was posted through December 23 and the search committee will be working to bring forward candidates, Superintendent of Schools Jeff Granatino said. "We'll see what comes forward," he said.
  • The students at the joined forces with the last quarter. The program, which ended earlier this month, allowed 15 fourth grade students to travel weekly to the Mass Hospital School for an arts program with their students, according to Granatino. A grant funded the program, which let the Canton fourth graders work with the students at Mass Hospital School.
  • The superintendent is adding another task to his busy schedule. This time, he will be on the hosting a monthly show all about education. Granatino will be highlighting "some of the great things going on with the district," he said, noting he will discuss budgets, programs, school maintenance and more. "I've never hosted a show before," he said. The show on Canton Community Television will be "a lot of fun.
  • The School Committee approved a trip for Canton High student to visit New York City in April. Performing Arts Director is running the trip, which will include a Broadway show, lunch, dinner, a visit to Times Square and a jazz concert at the Lincoln Center for $260 per student. Fifty students and five chaperones will be able to attend, and the group will do fund-raising to help with the cost.
  • Over at , French Teacher Rebecca Stiles will be taking a group of seventh, eighth and ninth graders to Montreal in April. From April 15-17, the group will take curling lessons, learn traditional dances and folk songs, take a language class at a French school in Montréal and explore Canada. The School Committee also approved this field trip at their last meeting.
