Canton football Falls as Completing Assignments Earns Sharon Football Third W

Eagles celebrate Homecoming with first Hockomock League victory in years.

The used "assignment football" here Saturday to record its first Hockomock League victory in years.

Senior quarterback and captain Caleb Piltch-Loeb ran for two 2-yard touchdowns as the Eagles defeated visiting Canton, 28-13, on Sharon High's .

Junior QB Nathan Pedersen threw a 23-yard TD pass to classmate Brad Kaufman, while classmate Sean Asnes ran for a 10-yard score for Sharon's final touchdown.

"We played assignment football. Our defensive line, linebackers, safeties, everybody defensively made it happen," Sharon head coach Dave Morse said.

"It was just assignment football. They knew their gaps. They shot them and made plays."

Sharon (3-3) defeated a Hockomock League opponent for the first time this season, having lost to King Philip, Stoughton and Mansfield.

Sharon Athletic Director Robert Sondheim believed the Eagles last beat a Hockomock team six years ago.

Canton (2-4) took a 7-0 lead with 5:02 left in the first quarter.

Bulldogs junior Elias Camacho ran for a 48-yard touchdown. Senior Brendan Monagle kicked the extra point.

Sharon then scored 28 unanswered points.

With 8:06 left in the first half, Pedersen threw for his first touchdown of the season. Junior Eric Lesser kicked the extra point, tying the score at 7.

"(It was) Nate's first pass of the season" and came in "a huge situation. It was great," Morse said.

"It's just those little things," he said.

"When we have a full roster, it's what we can do."

Piltch-Loeb's first 2-yard TD run, and Lesser's kick, with 33 seconds left in the half put Sharon ahead, 14-7.

The score held until six seconds into the fourth quarter, when Piltch-Loeb's touchdown completed a drive that began late in the third quarter.

Asnes scored about two minutes later. Lesser's kick made the score 28-7, Sharon.

Canton junior Dexter Green ran for an 8-yard TD late in the fourth quarter for the 28-13 final.

"We're kind of transitioning. New offense, new defense. So, we made our share of mistakes," Bulldogs head coach Dave Bohane said.

"We made our share of bad calls by me. I think that comes with some growing pains."

Sharon next plays at 1 p.m. next Saturday, hosting North Attleboro.

Canton plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Franklin.
