Girls Winter Track: Canton Beats Sharon at Boston University

The Canton High School indoor track teams faced Sharon Thursday.

Sharon High School senior co-captain Meri Kushner won the high jump and qualified for the state meet in the 55 meter hurdles, but Canton defeated the , 54-41, on Thursday at Boston University.

Kushner won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 8 inches, according to www.coolrunning.com. Sophomore Rita Kushner, her sister, was second (4 feet, 4 inches) and Canton junior Mellyn Costello was third (4 feet, 2 inches.)

Meri Kushner placed second in the 55 meter hurdles, with a time of 9.6 seconds. That time qualified her for the state meet, said Alan Conway, one of Sharon's coaches. Canton's Costello won the event (9.54) and Sharon freshman Hannah Morrissey was third (11.63), according to coolrunning.

Kushner also was second in the long jump, with a leap of 14 feet, 5 inches. Canton senior Victoria Tondre won the event (15 feet, 8 inches). Bulldogs junior Ericka Boughter was third (12 feet, 2 inches).

Sharon junior Anna Fratello won the 1000 meter run, with a time of 3:27.51 minutes, according to coolrunning. Canton sophomore Courtney Loughnane was second (3:28.63), followed by Sharon junior Sarah McGrath (3:32.88).

Fratello and Canton junior Caroline Haidul tied for second in the shot put, with a throw of 26 feet, 11.5 inches. Canton senior Luckesha Jospeh won the event, with a throw of 27 feet, 6 inches.

Sharon senior co-captain Jessica Oknin won the two-mile, with a time of 13:28.34 minutes, according to coolrunning. Canton senior Mairead Bagley was second (13:45.09) and Sharon's McGrath third (13:58.01).

Oknin also placed second in the mile, with a time of 6:14.38 minutes. Canton's Bagley was first (6:08.72) and Canton freshman Kerrin Sennett was third (6:42.13.)

Sharon sophomore Madison Tippett placed second in the 55 meter dash, with a time of 7.96 seconds, according to coolrunning. Canton's Costello won the event (7.89), and the Bulldogs' Boughter was third (8.7.)

Tippett also placed second in the 600 meter run (1:51.18 minutes), behind Canton sophomore Michaela Kelly (1:49.08). Canton sophomore Jackie Merrigan was third (1:55.97).

Canton's Tondre won the 300 meter dash, with a time of 44.59 seconds, according to coolrunning. Sharon's Rita Kushner was second (47.67), followed by Canton sophomore Kelly Stigas (49.78).

Canton won the 4 by 400 meter relay, 4:29.09 minutes to 4:41.94.
