Canton Patch Athlete of the Week: The Six Pack

This Week's segment is to salute teams from the recently completed Fall season, instead of individuals. Canton High School and Blue Hills have had an outstanding season and we would like to introduce to you six championship teams for the Athletes Of-The-W

 

CANTON HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER TEAM ADVANCES TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Canton finished its regular season with a 14-1-2 record and captured the Hockomock League Classic Cup as the Davenport (Small Schools) Division Champion and defeating Franklin, the Kelley-Rex first place team. The Bulldogs are 41-6-5 over and have dominated the opposition. Canton captured this year’s with a 3-0 victory over perennial power Duxbury. Canton went on to play Newburyport (The Division-2 North Sectional winner) this past Wednesday, in Lynn, in the State Semifinals, and again had a dominant performance in a 3-0 victory. Canton has outscored its first five post-season opponents, 20-0. The Bulldogs (19-1-2) now advance to today’s State Championship Game against Auburn at Worcester State at 3:00 p.m.. The Canton Girls’ Soccer team is coached by Paul Turner.

BLUE HILLS FOOTBALL TEAM: have dominated the opposition and clinched the Mayflower League Large title with two games still to be played. It is Blue Hills’ second consecutive league title and it will make its second straight post-season appearance (against the Boston North Conference champion). The team has a 9-1 record overall and 4-0 in the league. The Warriors have one more game left in the regular season, Thanksgiving Day, at home, against Bristol Plymouth. Blue Hills has outscored its opponents, 310-44. The Warriors are coached by Ed Catabia, who is also the school’s Athletic Director.

CANTON HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY TEAM: The has continued its winning tradition with another year of excellence. Canton finished the regular season with a 16-0-1 record, its second consecutive unbeaten regular season. The Bulldogs recently captured its third consecutive to go along with two State Titles, 2004 and 2006 and a runner-up in 2007. In the past five seasons, Canton has compiled a 91-8-9 record and four Hockomock League crowns. Canton has allowed an average of less than a goal per game in the last three seasons combined. This past week, the Bulldogs played two-time defending State Champion Watertown for a third consecutive season, in the State semifinals, and for a third consecutive year lost a one-goal game. Canton is coached by Fior Griffin.

CANTON HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER TEAM: Canton just completed a sensational 10-1-6 regular season record, capturing and its second straight Classic Cup victory over the winner of the Kelley-Rex (Large Schools) Division. has advanced to at least the Sectional semifinals in each of the last six seasons, compiling an 81-15-25 record. The Bulldogs remain unbeaten at home and in league play for over two and a half seasons (29-0-10) and have given up under a goal a game average combined in that time span. Canton is the defending Division-2 South Sectional Champions, before losing out to Hopkinton in the Sectional semifinals, last week. The Bulldogs are coached by Dan Erickson who is also the school’s Athletic Director.

CANTON HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM: ended the regular season with a 15-3 overall record and a 12-3 Hockomock League mark, capturing the Davenport Division title. The program is relatively young, compared too much of its opposition, but has put together an impressive resume. The Bulldogs have compiled a 75-19 record over the last five seasons, advancing to post-season play every year, capturing League titles 8 of the last 9 years. Canton advanced to this year’s Division-2 Central Sectional semifinals, before losing, and after two post-season shutout victories. The Canton Girls’ Volleyball team is coached by Pat Cawley.

CANTON HIGH SCHOOL GOLF TEAM: The Canton High School captured the Hockomock League Championship at Granite Links Country Club, two weeks ago. The Bulldogs went on to finish in fifth place in the Division-3 South State Tournament and had one golfer, Sam Riemer compete all the way to the State Finals. The Canton Golf Team is coached by Jim Spillane.
